Sitting and Standing Awareness:

Exactly as the name suggests.

Be aware of the times when you stand up or sit down.

There are a lot of actions taken by us everyday that are autonomous behaviours. These are the actions we take without giving a single thought about it.

We do not think of them as important enough tasks to spend some conscious energy behind them.

Whenever you need it, you just stand up. Similarly, you sit down whenever there is a need to sit down; without thinking much about it.

Majority do not think about this action at all while doing this.

So, this is going to be a simple enough exercise.

From this point on, just be aware of the times you stand up or sit down.

Counting the number of times, one has stood up and sat down is also helpful. But it is not as easy as it sounds and might prove to be too difficult to continue to do for beginners. But if done correctly, it has the potential to improve the focus and memory function of the meditators.

For starters, you can do the following.

When standing up, focus on the parts of the body that are activated.

Are you putting pressure on your knees or your toes? Is there more pressure on one leg than the other?

These are the things you can focus on while doing this exercise.

You also try to check all the sensations that go through with your body when you do so.

You might feel a little dizzy when you stand up to quickly. Keep note of that. You might feel that one of your knee joints is starting to ache when you stand up. You might feel your back tensed up when you sit down sometimes.

Keeping note of your body and taking measurements accordingly should be the main goal here.

Previously I said that it was a simple enough exercise. Which is true, but with a catch.

Doing this exercise is simple, but remembering to do this is not that simple.

At first, you are not very likely to be conscious about the times you stand up or sit down. That is because we have been doing this for so long without putting any thoughts behind it. Forgetting to do it is normal. It will get better as you keep on practicing.

I will talk about some tips about how to remember to do these exercises a little bit later on this book.
